Did you know...

That students in the 1940's used actual dance cards at their social events?

While today we might casually think of telling someone that "our dance card is full", or asking them to "save a spot on their dance card" for us, in the 1940's this would have been a much more literal statement than the phrases and sayings we use today.   During this time, at school dances and other social events, students at SAIT (then known as PITA) were given an actual paper dance card like the one seen here, with a listing of the upcoming dances and a space beside each for students to fill in their dance partner.  In some cases, the name of the song or even the band might be included as well.

As with the many tradditions from this period in time, today this custom has long since ceased it's use.  Yet even so, a sense of it still remains in our culture today.

Calgary Communities, In Portraits - Exhibition in the Library

Continuing our collaboration with ICT’s Photojournalism Program, the Library is pleased to have student works on display at the Reg Erhardt Library on a regular basis.

Running now to August 15, the Community Portrait Exhibition features photographs of people in Calgary communities.  Each student was assigned to one of 16 communities.  They visited their communities at least once a week for 9 weeks and took portraits of residents or people who worked full time in the community.  Throughout this process, subjects were asked questions about themselves and their communities.  The objective is to document, in portraits, small parts of our city.  This is an ongoing project.  The ultimate goal is, over many years, to create an archive of the residents of Calgary.

What a wonderful way to celebrate our City through visuals and for years to come!

Check out what makes Calgary a great place!  On display until mid-August.
